President Seretse Khama Ian Khama congratulates President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the subject of Rio de Janeiro’s successful bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

“6 October 2009
Your Excellency,
|
I am delighted to congratulate you and the Brazilian nation on your successful bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The sunshine and coastal city of Rio de Janeiro which is linked to Botswana through the Tropic of Capricorn is an excellent venue for these games which unite humanity.
Botswana shares the joy and celebration of the heroic Brazilian nation, as they prepare to welcome the nations of the world. It would not be for the first time that we experience the unparalleled hospitality, friendship, exuberance and flamboyance of Brazilian culture. Brazil has hosted many international events and at the end of such events participants always take away with them something special about the country and people.
For many years both the Olympic and the Paralympics Games were held in different parts of the world to the exclusion of South America and Africa. We are particularly pleased that the world has finally come to accept that the nations of the South have a major contribution to make in enhancing international understanding and goodwill amongst people through sports.
I pay tribute to your inspirational leadership and the wonderful work of your National Organizing Committee for their ability and success in presenting the beautiful story of Brazil.
Lieutenant General Seretse Khama Ian Khama
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA”
